A Closer Look at Methods of Evaluating Fill Times for Injection Molding

Abstract: One of the most important process parameters to establish and document for any injection molded part is fill time. The fill time affects a number of important factors, such as viscosity, the pressure and temperature distribution inside the cavities, and ultimately the overall part quality (dimensional, aesthetics, strength, etc.). Various methods exist to aid processors in identifying what the ideal fill time is for a given mold, including: DOE’s, mold filling simulation, and Relative Viscosity test. This presentation will focus on research performed on the Relative Viscosity test as it is the most common practice among processors who utilize scientific molding principles. The Relative Viscosity test is called into question and alternative methods are also discussed.
